Onion rings test 1

This week I am trying the best onion rings recipe I could find.

Test number 1 is “Old Fashioned Onion Rings” from allrecipes.

The recipe calls for

  • 1 big onion, cut into 1/4 inch slices and separate into rings
  • 1 1/4 cups of all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup milk
  • 3/4 cup of dry bread crumbs
  • More salt and other seasonings to taste
  • 1 quart oil for frying, or as needed

Directions

  1. For this recipe I kept it simple, no other seasoning than salt. First I heated the oil to 365 degrees F.
  2. Then I mixed the flour with baking powder and salt.
  3. I coated the onion slices in the mixture and set aside to dry.
  4. I whisked together the egg and the milk with the remaining flour mixture (preferably use a fork). I took the onion slices previously coated with flour and dipped them in the batter. Placed them on a rack until there was no more dripping.
  5. I spread the bread crumbs in a shallow dish and coated the onion rings one at a time into the crumbs, and scoop some extra crumbs up over the ring to coat. If you did well, the coating should cling with no problem.
  6. Deep fried the onion rings for 2 to 3 minutes (make sure not to overload your deep fryer so the temperature doesn’t drop and the rings don’t start sticking to each other. I drained them on a paper towel and seasoned them with some salt.

Outcome:

They were delicious! Crispy on the outside and tender inside. I will definitely make again. Maybe try the “Panko” bread crumbs and some other seasoning (something spicy!)
