Onion rings test 1
This week I am trying the best onion rings recipe I could find.
Test number 1 is “Old Fashioned Onion Rings” from allrecipes.
The recipe calls for
- 1 big onion, cut into 1/4 inch slices and separate into rings
- 1 1/4 cups of all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon of baking powder
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- 1 egg
- 1 cup milk
- 3/4 cup of dry bread crumbs
- More salt and other seasonings to taste
- 1 quart oil for frying, or as needed
Directions
- For this recipe I kept it simple, no other seasoning than salt. First I heated the oil to 365 degrees F.
- Then I mixed the flour with baking powder and salt.
- I coated the onion slices in the mixture and set aside to dry.
- I whisked together the egg and the milk with the remaining flour mixture (preferably use a fork). I took the onion slices previously coated with flour and dipped them in the batter. Placed them on a rack until there was no more dripping.
- I spread the bread crumbs in a shallow dish and coated the onion rings one at a time into the crumbs, and scoop some extra crumbs up over the ring to coat. If you did well, the coating should cling with no problem.
- Deep fried the onion rings for 2 to 3 minutes (make sure not to overload your deep fryer so the temperature doesn’t drop and the rings don’t start sticking to each other. I drained them on a paper towel and seasoned them with some salt.
Outcome:
They were delicious! Crispy on the outside and tender inside. I will definitely make again. Maybe try the “Panko” bread crumbs and some other seasoning (something spicy!)
